BIENNALE INTERNAZIONALE DELL'ARTE CONTEMPORANEA
December 6-14 2003
Florence, Fortezza da Basso, Italy
www.artestudio.net

The fourth edition of the Biennale Internazionale dell'Arte Contemporanea di Firenze (Florence International Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary Art) will be held from 6 through 14 December 2003 at the historical Fortezza da Basso. Following the 1999 edition, which hosted 40,000 visitors in nine days, the exhibition enjoyed significant expansion at its third edition in 2001, which saw participation by more than 800 artists from 72 countries.

President Prof. Pasquale Celona's appointment of John Spike as Artistic Director of the Biennale, at the time of the first edition made it possible to create the International Jury and the lnternational Scientific Committee.

The task of the Scientific Committee, now counting about 50 qualified members, is to decide which artists will participate in the Biennale in the categories of painting, sculpture, graphic arts, mixed media, installations, photography, and digital art, Selection is in no way dependent on style, school or artistic movement; the artists are not selected with an eye to national representation but rather solely on the basis of criteria that privilege the quality of their creative work and the cultural and ethnic values they represent.

In collaboration with the United Nations, the Biennale is an official participant in the U.N. "Dialogue among Civilizations" program. In the words of Kofi Annan:

“I believe that the dialogue is an opportunity for people of different cultures and traditions to come to know one another better, whether they live on opposite sides of the world or on the same street.”

"INTERPEACE"

"This painting signifies the hope we give to one another, the blending and overlapping of different countries of the world, achieving friendship and peace through culture."

Rosemary Gillett, a visual artist of Winter Park, Florida, has been nominated to participate in the Florence, Italy Biennale, December 6-14, 2003.

Rosemary has created a 6' x 6' painting depicting the colors of the flags of the world, signifying the hope we give to one another, the feeling and overlapping of countries of the world, with the purpose of achieving friendship and peace through culture.

With the United Arts of Central Florida and Darden Olive Garden Restaurants being sponsors in part, Rosemary is representing central Florida, USA in this event with 74 participating countries.
